Post-Op Protocols

Following your post-operative protocol carefully is one of the most important things you can do for a safe, full recovery. Here's what to expect in the days and weeks after surgery.

Immediately After Surgery

You will spend time in the recovery room as the anesthesia wears off. A responsible adult must be present to drive you home because you will not be permitted to drive yourself. Plan to rest for most of the first 24–48 hours.*

Keep the surgical site elevated above heart level when possible
Apply ice or cold therapy as directed, typically 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off
Take prescribed pain medications as directed before pain becomes severe
Do not apply heat to the surgical site

Wound Care

Specific wound care instructions will be provided at discharge. General guidance:*

Keep the incision dry until cleared by Dr. Sonntag
Do not submerge the wound in water (no baths, pools, or hot tubs)
Change dressings as instructed
Contact the office immediately if you notice increased redness, warmth, drainage, or fever above 101.5°F

Weight Bearing & Activity

Weight-bearing restrictions vary significantly by procedure. Follow your specific instructions carefully. Doing too much too soon is one of the most common causes of complications.*

Use crutches or a walker if instructed
Do not put weight on the surgical limb without clearance
Gradually increase activity only as directed
Avoid driving until cleared; this varies by procedure and which leg was operated on

Pain Management

Some discomfort after surgery is normal and expected. Managing it proactively helps you rest, sleep, and participate in physical therapy.*

Take prescribed medications on schedule in the first 48–72 hours
Transition to over-the-counter pain relief as recommended
Ice therapy is one of the most effective non-medication pain management tools
Contact the office if pain is severe, worsening, or not responding to medication

Follow-Up Appointments

Post-operative follow-up is essential. You will typically be seen in the office within 1–2 weeks after surgery to check the wound, remove sutures, and assess healing. Do not skip these appointments.*
