A discussion checklist for shoulder surgery: home support, written instructions, transportation, therapy, and questions about returning to daily life.

Preparing for Shoulder Surgery and Recovery content

Know which operation and plan apply to you

A shoulder replacement and a tendon repair have different healing needs. Confirm the proposed procedure, why it is recommended, and how it may affect daily activities. Use the written instructions for your operation.

Arrange practical help

Place frequently used items within easy reach and plan assistance with tasks that normally require both arms. Ask about getting dressed, bathing, meals, and transportation. Discuss whether your home setup or lack of available support affects discharge planning.

Clarify medication and fasting instructions

Give the team a complete medication and supplement list. Obtain personalized instructions from the surgical and anesthesia teams about what to take, pause, eat, or drink before surgery. Do not stop prescribed medication based on a general website checklist.

Ask about recovery before surgery day

Confirm sling use, follow-up visits, therapy arrangements, and how to contact the team with concerns. Ask when driving, work, and lifting will be reassessed. A projected milestone is not permission to resume an activity without clearance.

Common questions

Can I use the same recovery plan as a friend?

No. The operation, tissue healing, and individual health factors can change restrictions and the pace of rehabilitation.
