About this procedure
Rotator cuff repair reattaches a torn tendon to its natural spot on the upper arm bone, usually using small anchors and sutures. Dr. Sonntag most often performs it arthroscopically, working through small incisions with a camera. This approach spares surrounding tissue and allows a precise repair of the damaged tendon.
Dr. Sonntag recommends repair when a tear causes weakness or ongoing pain, or when conservative treatment has not restored function. He evaluates the size and quality of the tear before surgery, and reserves the procedure for patients likely to benefit from reattaching the tendon rather than continuing nonsurgical care.
