About this procedure
Shoulder replacement removes the worn ball and socket and replaces them with metal and plastic components. In an anatomic replacement, the new parts mirror the natural anatomy. In a reverse replacement, the ball and socket are switched, which lets other muscles power the arm when the rotator cuff is no longer intact.
Dr. Sonntag reserves replacement for patients whose arthritis or damage no longer responds to conservative care. He selects between anatomic and reverse designs based on the condition of the rotator cuff and the shape of the joint, tailoring the choice to each patient's anatomy and functional goals.
