Knee Arthritis
A progressive loss of the cartilage that cushions the knee joint, leading to pain, swelling, stiffness, and trouble with walking and stairs.
About this condition
Knee arthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones in the knee gradually wears down. As it thins, the bones rub together, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. The knee may feel like it catches or gives way, and symptoms often build slowly over years.
Dr. Sonntag starts with nonsurgical care aimed at reducing pain and preserving function, including physical therapy, weight management, bracing, and injections. Many patients manage well for years this way. When arthritis becomes severe and conservative measures stop working, he discusses whether a knee replacement makes sense.
