About this procedure
A Bankart repair fixes a specific tear of the labrum, the cartilage rim of the socket, that commonly occurs when the shoulder dislocates. Dr. Sonntag reattaches the torn labrum and stretched ligaments to the edge of the socket using small anchors, rebuilding the bumper that keeps the ball in place.
Dr. Sonntag typically recommends this repair for patients with recurrent dislocations and minimal bone loss. He confirms the pattern of injury with imaging beforehand, since patients with significant bone loss may need a different procedure. When the labrum is the main problem, this arthroscopic repair restores stability effectively.
