Knee Replacement

A procedure that resurfaces the damaged knee joint with durable implants, relieving arthritis pain and restoring comfortable walking and movement.

About this procedure

Knee replacement removes the worn, arthritic surfaces of the knee and replaces them with metal and plastic components that recreate a smooth gliding joint. Depending on how much of the knee is affected, this may involve resurfacing the entire joint or, in select cases, only the damaged portion.

Dr. Sonntag recommends knee replacement only after conservative treatments no longer control the pain and arthritis meaningfully limits daily life. He reviews each patient's imaging, activity level, and goals to confirm they are a good candidate, approaching surgery as the right step once other options have been exhausted.

What to expect

  • Resurfaces the joint with durable implants
  • Significant, lasting relief from arthritis pain
  • Restores comfortable walking and motion
  • Improved ability to return to daily activities*
Recovery

Most patients are walking with support soon after surgery and progress through physical therapy over several weeks, with recovery typically continuing for several months to a year.*
