Planning for Knee Replacement Recovery

Prepare questions about walking, knee movement, therapy, stairs, and returning to daily activities after knee replacement.

Planning for Knee Replacement Recovery content

Build movement and strength gradually

Knee replacement recovery includes a prescribed exercise and walking program. Regaining motion and strength takes time. Follow your surgeon's and therapist's instructions for activity, walking aids, and exercise; pain relief alone does not mean the knee is ready for every activity.

Make the first weeks easier to manage

Arrange transportation and help at home. Clear walking paths, discuss stairs and bathroom access, and keep the care team's contact details handy. Ask how to manage swelling and discomfort and when to attend follow-up visits.

Set goals for the tasks you actually do

Discuss standing at work, getting into a car, using stairs, and returning to recreation. Each task has different demands. Driving also depends on safe vehicle control and medication use. Ask for clearance rather than choosing a date from a generic recovery timeline.

Know when to contact the team

Ask for written instructions about wound changes, fever, worsening pain, or calf swelling. Seek emergency care for chest pain or trouble breathing. Keep scheduled follow-up visits even when recovery seems to be progressing well.

Common questions

Can I do more exercise to recover faster?

Follow the prescribed program and discuss changes with your therapist or surgeon. More activity is not always appropriate for the stage of healing.

When can I return to sports?

Discuss the specific sport and its demands with your surgeon. Lower-impact activities are generally favored after joint replacement; clearance is individual.
