Pectoralis Major Tendon Injuries
A tear of the large chest muscle where its tendon attaches to the arm, often occurring during heavy lifting such as a bench press.
About this condition
The pectoralis major is the large muscle of the chest that helps move the arm across the body. Its tendon can partially or completely tear where it anchors to the upper arm bone, most often during a forceful lift like a bench press. A full tear may cause a sudden pop, bruising, and a change in chest shape.
Dr. Sonntag bases treatment on the size of the tear and the patient's strength demands. Partial tears and injuries in less active patients often do well with rest and rehabilitation. For complete tears in active individuals, he discusses surgical repair, which works best when performed relatively soon after the injury.
