Biceps Injuries
Damage to the biceps tendon where it attaches at the shoulder, ranging from inflammation and fraying to a partial or complete tear that causes pain and weakness.
About this condition
The biceps muscle connects to the shoulder through a long tendon that can become inflamed, frayed, or torn. Problems often start as tendon irritation from overuse and can progress to a partial or full rupture. A complete tear sometimes produces a visible bulge in the upper arm, sometimes called a Popeye deformity.
Dr. Sonntag matches treatment to the severity of the injury and the patient's activity goals. Tendon irritation and many partial tears settle with rest, therapy, and injections. When pain persists or a tear affects strength, he discusses surgical options, often addressed at the same time as related shoulder problems.
